International War on DrugsBefore I attempt to sound overly educated on this subject I would like to give credit to my foremost source of information. Noam Chomsky. We create programs which at the surface level sound good, but when you dig deep you see the truth. To promote our own crops and farmers (and thus the US economy) we created a program called "Food for Peace." Basically the purpose of this program (as described) is to enable peace by feeding the poor so they do not have to fight for food. What does food for peace have to do with the international war on drugs? By flooding poor countries with our subsidized crops we create an uncertain environment in which the prices of the local commodities drop. Big companies can handle this: they can loose money this year, and make it up next year... What does this do to poor farmers? Well maybe they can't eat this year, but they will be able to next year. Our food for peace program wiped out the vast wheat fields of Columbia. Looking to stay alive these farmers look for something with a stable demand. Coca is planted merely so these poor farmers can stay alive. I know what you are thinking, we send aid to help these countries. This is true, but the aid does not go to these poor farmers to help them create alternate crops. We send money to the government which is intertwined with the largest Columbian drug dealers. This money is used to kill off the peasants and accumulate more wealth. We demand that Columbia use biological and chemical weapons to fight off the peasant farmers (these rogue guerillas). Some say that we are only helping because their government asked for it. The truth of it is that if they did not ask for our "help" in slaughtering their poor, they would no longer be in charge. What are ways we could help (assuming we actually wanted to)
Those are the types of things we would do with the war on drugs if we wanted to help, but we don't. What is the goal of the war on drugs then? The needless slaughter of the poor and accumulation of wealth...that is how our US humanitarian aid is felt in Columbia. The war on drugs is failing. We are not changing our plan of attack, only increasing funding. This means one of two things we either
How does this same international war on drugs help us back home? |
